File extension M3U refers to a metafile file, which refers to file extension MP3 files as well as providing further metadata for the items within the playlist. M3U means Moving Picture Experts Group Audio Layer 3 Uniform Resource Locator or MP3 URL. This file format for computers stores compact disc playlists. It was initially designed to be used in WinAmp but is widely supported through various applications, such as PlayStation Portable, Spider Player, RokuLabs SoundBridge, JetAudio, Music Engine by Yahoo!, QuickTime Player, iTunes, Media Player from Windows and RealPlayer.
Other applications that support file extension M3U files are FooBar2000, XMMS, and the media player by VLC. This file is of plain text, which contains locations of one or sometimes more than one media file, instructing the media player to open and play them.
